G R A T I T U D E or R E L I E F ?
Often when we feel grateful for something we are actually experiencing relief that things went the way we wanted them to go. Or we got what we thought we really wanted. We feel good.
This feeling of relief occurs when we are attached to a certain outcome (feeling good) rather than being open to whatever we get.
The kind of gratitude I am interested in does not depend on outcomes at all, it permeates every moment we understand that our lives happen for us, no matter what happens. In the discomfort of not getting what I want is the opportunity to become more self aware, conscious, and in the end, truly and 100% grateful.
Don't kids mature by not getting what they want? Don't they express gratitude to their parents later in life for the lessons they learned in not getting what they wanted? (Don't they??)
Can you feel the difference between relief and gratitude?
Here's a challenge: notice something today that you feel grateful for. Maybe it's something you own or a phone call or a quiet moment to yourself. See if what you are feeling is actually relief by asking yourself if you could embrace the opportunity for learning and growth in the exact opposite.
